The NYC Department of Buildings reports that it is approximately 18m long, 2.5m wide and 1.5m high and has been illegally excavated underneath a single-storey extension behind four-storey buildings. There are conflicting reports on the age and purpose of the tunnel. The scenes follow a similarly viral series of posts from to a user on the social media platform TikTok dubbed ‘TikTok tunnel girl’ in Virginia, USA, who has constructed an unauthorised tunnel under her own residence which extended under neighbouring properties. Worshippers at the Brooklyn synagogue, known to be the World Headquarters of the Chabad-Lubavitch Hasidic movement, appear to have constructed at least a tunnel, if not a network of tunnels, in or near the building which they had connected to a neighbouring educational establishment. Viral videos showing members of the Hasidic Jewish community emerging from under a New York City synagogue and clashing with the New York Police Department (NYPD) have drawn concern from engineers and authorities.
